AUG. 21st special meeting minutes

Artists Meeting minutes august 21, 2007

In attendance were Leesa & Nicole Abahuni & gh. Discussion centered around what to do for the dumbo projections. L & N are proposing to do a video of a Baaci game where artists are interviewed while they play the game.

Ursula & James sent emails with questions that were discussed.

Structure of the projection piece was discussed. Each member is asked to assemble a group of clips ranging from 5 seconds to 30 seconds that reflect on the process of trying to work together. The clips should be in SD 4:3.

The clips will be put onto a dvd in separate chapters or video streams programmed for random playback. The audio portion will be six separate audio streams. Leesa & Nicole have suggested we use six clip on mini – Marshall amplifiers with discman players.

We need to meet next week and divide up tasks for the dumbo projections.

Here is the structure:

1. someone needs to gather all the clips from the group and either edit a final cut movie/dvd or program a random select dvd.
2. someone needs to gather all the audio and edit it into 6 separate audio streams.
3. someone needs to gather all the text and animate it for incorporation into the projections.
4. someone needs to take on the job of finding one or more projectors for us to use for the festival.

We need to set some deadlines for the final material. The festival is Fri. Sat. Sun. Sept. 28,29,30. We should have all materials to be edited into the final form by Sept. 21st. Therefore the deadline for final material should be Sept. 14th to give the editors a week to assemble the final form.

Leesa & Nicole also have binaural recording microphones to use if someone needs them.

The good new is that the Whitney Museum has invited GH and by extension the group to propose pieces for the Downtown Whitney High line in the spring. So we have three gigs that are happening, the DUMBO show, Brooklyn poly, and the Whitney.

hi all,

great that the dumbo festival accepted the proposal!
i won't be able to join any of the special meetings or
the dumbo site
review meeting because i am in europe until september
23, as some of
you know already.

but i'd like to add some of my thoughts and ideas and
suggestions in
regard to content and concept for dumbo and the
projections.

TRANSPARENCY
I am (still) fascinated by the idea of highlighting
the process of
getting to know each others work while producing a
show, by asking
questions and getting answers, and by making the
process visible, and
using this transparency as a theme for a possible
"collaborate" piece.

as much as "transparency" is hyped right now (or maybe
the hype is
over already ;-), but the idea to show what you think,
i.e. how you
operate, how you program, the open source code, the
open brain code,
the open group code, something like this, is truly
fascinating -- and
always a bit scary ;-)

CHAT ON 10 QUESTIONS:
it seems to me that my initial proposal of some kind
of chat format
running the 10 questions plus its answers might be
something the
group considers working with for dumbo.
maybe we can get as many people as possible to answer
these in the
next weeks...?
btw, thanks thomas for answering the 10 questions (i
thanked gh in
person at the last meeting ;-)

JURORS THOUGHTS MADE VISIBLE/AUDIBLE
i also like the idea to add the imaginary thoughts a
juror might have
about our proposals (leesa and nicole brought that
idea up last
time)....this could be really funny --> this would
mean to develop a
fictional text of the inner monologue of a juror. this
text would
play a real counterpart to the "truthfully" answered
questions to
the 10 Qs.
(...and funny enough, jury's decisions about what is
accepted into
festivals and what not is usually NOT transparent.)

MEDIA:
I very much like the idea of several media using the
text material.
so some of the projections could be a "life" chat of
the 10
questions....but also some sort of "inner" blog of the
juror, that is
typed "on the fly".

GH, did Dumbo only accept projections or could we also
do performance
work or sound work? the idea of the clipped on sound
system that
reads text would be just really 'cool!'

ONLINE COMPONENT:
I think it would be great to put as much of the info,
dialogs,
exchanged conversation online...this could all be
used, and can
always be accessed.

SITE VISIT:
if we do a life chat we should check if the dumbo
festival either
provides internet access or we can test if there is
some wireless
access in the neighborhood we could tap into.

MEETING TONIGHT:
maybe the meeting could be videotaped/streamed
again...?

MOVING FORWARD:
it would be also nice to start testing a
question/answer chat...check
out chat software...?see if maybe skype could work...i
think thomas
mentioned to look into this? great!

as much as i will be very busy -- i am preparing for
several
exhibitions in europe in september -- i will try
staying on top of
the online discussions, email exchanges and posts.

all best and greetings from venice,
ursula

Hey..

i had a crappy travel day today with lots of delays... and no time at a
computer.
but,
here's my unfinished notes for the meeting... if anything does not makes
sense here, well, that's 'cause i had intended to finish working on it
today - but could not!
James

I really wanted to come to the meeting tonight, but I’m not in New York,
so, here are a couple of questions and thoughts about the DUMBO show..

questions…

Is this to be a joint production or a sequence of individual works as
implied would be our MO in the Tribeca fund document? –Or alternatively
maybe a few sub-groups each composed of 2, 3, or 4 members doing their own
thing?

And for whatever form is chosen… why?

I love the idea of the conversational form stemming from our ongoing
interview/s and dialogs; but in THIS context I wonder how engaging that
will be as an outdoor projection on a wall?

Maybe we could produce a booklet or let the interview unfold online while
the projections could be a bit more sudden, spatial, tripped-out, and
engaging? Something that really lights up the space or our collective
mood?

At a fundamental level, what are we hoping to do in or to the world by
this action?

Is the idea to blend-in? To explode? To create something that looks like
what we expect to see as “new media art”… to make people nervous? Be
“brutally weird”?

Are we responding to the physical space or ignoring it? Or something in
between?

Do we use English? What about something that avoids words? Or invents a
new language?

comments…

I think we should do something quite unexpected, and different from what
we will do in the future.

In a way, I think we should talk about establishing a way of working in
general, figure that out, and then break our own mold with this one-off
opening experiment.

In terms of form, content and process, I would prefer to do something that
is high impact, but also simple and direct.

Something that either makes ‘sense’ at the site of the festival and
prompts people to think or feel something new, or alternatively, something
mystical, confusing, color-saturated, and hypnotizing.
