October 23 - November 21, 2010
Reception: Thursday, October 28, 6 - 8pm
Westside Gallery
School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “Parallel Threads,” an exhibition of prints, digital video, computer animation and interactive installations by students, alumni and faculty from the MFA Computer Art Department. Curated by Diane Field and Charley Lewis, the exhibition will be on view October 23 - November 21 at the Westside Gallery, 133/141 West 21st Street, New York City.
The exhibiting alumni include Dustin Grella (MFA 2009 Computer Art), Jose Carlos Casado (MFA 2001 Computer Art) and John Cinco (MFA 1998 Computer Art). Grella develops artifacts and events that explore the human experience through the passage of time. His work focuses on the design and creation of systems that gather the thoughts or feelings of individuals at particular moments. Through animation, installation, and even the postal services, Grella combines equal measures of sincerity and absurdity, structure and improvisation. By highlighting seemingly mundane tasks, he focuses on the importance of the moment.
Participating students include Beyza Boyacioglu, Hyelim Kim, Jonathan Brainin, Hwayong Jung, Hyung Gyu Kim and Song Yup Kim. Their works range in medium from 3D animation to interactive installations.
Faculty participants include Joseph Nechvatal, Jarryd Lowder, Eric Eiser and Andy Deck. Lowder is an artist working with electronic audiovisual media (integrating forms such as video, sound and music) primarily for live performance. His performances and other works have been presented in the US and countries such as Spain, France, Japan, Finland, Korea and the Netherlands.
