Iconic theater ensemble Mabou Mines celebrates its 40th Anniversary at the Paula Cooper Gallery, where in 1970, Red Horse Animation, their first original work, was initially performed. The event, to be held at 534 W. 21st Street, on April 18, 2011, 8pm-midnight, includes cocktails, entertainment and live performances by: Philip Glass, Laurie Anderson, John Kelly, Steve Paxton, David Neumann and surprise guest artists.
Founded in the mid-1960’s by JoAnne Akalaitis, Lee Breuer, Philip Glass, Ruth Maleczech and David Warrilow, Mabou Mines developed a new theatrical language embracing emerging concepts in literature, music and visual arts. The New York Times wrote of Mabou Mines, that it is "the inspiration for so much that is innovative in the avant-garde today".
Mabou Mines has created 64 original productions and won more than 50 major awards, including 20 OBIE Awards. The company's productions have toured across the U.S., Mexico and Canada, as well as Asia, Australia, Europe and South America.
