Brett Balogh, artiste américain vivant à Chicago, prépare actuellement un MBA à la School of the Art Institute of Chicago au sein du Département art et nouvelles technologies. Il est depuis quelques mois en résidence en France à l’École Supérieure d’Art d’Aix-en-Provence dans le cadre du programme d’échange culturel franco-américain FACE.
Brett Balogh fonde son travail sur l’histoire des nouvelles technologies, voire sur l’obsolescence apparente et sur l’historicité de leurs appareils, pour créer des instruments et des systèmes destinés à l’élucidation de phénomènes fondamentaux et naturels du monde physique. Pour lui sa démarche est proche de l’élaboration d’outils d’exploration et d’expérimentation, tels des tactiques et des stratagèmes, produisant des œuvres qui amènent plus à penser “avec” qu’à penser “à”.
Brett Balogh s’intéresse aujourd’hui à l’aspect perceptif et physique du son au travers de l’utilisation de la radio et des phénomènes qui y sont liés. Sa dernière installation détourne des ondes radio courtes à partir d’antennes qui à la fois reçoivent et produisent du son. Les deux signaux radio et audio font vibrer simultanément l’antenne (un fil tendu), chacun se comportant et s’accordant l’un sur l’autre. La fréquence résonante de l’antenne permet une perception claire du signal sonore résultant de ces interactions, tout en distordant l’information première (le signal radio) émise dans l’antenne. Ces “erreurs” mis en boucle par le circuit se diffusent en continu et automatiquement dans l’espace, tel un paysage sonore génératif.

Brett Ian Balogh is an artist from Chicago, USA who is working towards his master's degree in the Department of Art and Technology Studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He is currently studying at l'Ecole Superieure d'Art d'Aix-en-Provence, an exchange funded by the French-American Cultural Exchange (FACE).
Brett's work involves the creation of instruments and systems from both new and obsolete technologies, aimed at elucidating fundamental relationships in the natural world. He considers his work to be
instruments of exploration and experimentation, as contrivances, tactics and stratagems, being works to think 'with' rather than to think 'of'.
Brett currently investigates the physical and perceptual aspects of sonic phenomena through the use of radio. The current installation consists of a repurposed shortwave radio whose antenna not only receives signals, but also produces sound. These two different signals vibrate simultaneously along the antenna (a tightwire), each behaving in accordance to their nature. The resonant frequency of the line allows for the clear reception of the signal resulting from these interactions, but distorts the information (radio signal) contained within. These errors in translation, looped by the circuit, are continuously diffused into the space, as a generative soundscape.
