THE THING spring collection auction

with works by Ryan Brown, Rainer Ganahl, Craig Kalpakjian,
Eva and Franco Mattes, Janine Gordon, Heidrun Holzfeind,
Douglas Wada, Paul Miller, Vuk Cosic, Cecillia Jurado,
Christoph Draeger, Joerg Lohse, Amy Granat and Olivier Mosset.

New works will be added during the coming weeks.

The spring collection is a benefit event for THE THING, Inc.

THE THING was founded in 1991 and became a not-for-profit corporation
in 1998. Prior to that date it was supported entirely by the dedication
and enthusiasm of a community of volunteer activists and artists.
Even with these limited resources THE THING quickly gained a reputation
as a center for new media practice and theory, social forums and on-line
art projects. Over the last two decades, THE THING has played a seminal
role not just in fostering a generation of network-oriented activist,
artists, critics, and curators, but also - and equally important -
searching out ways to interconnect their diverse interests and

In recent years activities mainly focused on archiving THE THING's
history and restore the original bbs web site .
This was done in collaboration with the Ludwig Boltzmann Institue,
Austria, which ended with the publication of "Net Pioneers 1.0,
Contextualizing Early Net-Based Art."

In the fall of 2009, THE THING rebooted its program activities
with a lecture and film and video screening series.
