My Letter From Enbridge: The Yes Men Strike Again!

March 15, 2011. I knew of the Alberta Tar Sands, and of the grave environmental dangers associated with extracting the oil and then transporting it, first through a pipeline that violates pristine forests in First Nation lands, and hence by tanker, through the vulnerable archipelago of northern British Columbia. I also knew the situation was already subject to the concerted resistance of various environmental and Native American activists, and that it had been targeted by the Yes Men for one of their inimitable interventions.

But it was not until receiving an email today, supposedly from Enbridge, that I realized I was witnessing a beautifully orchestrated campaign in which the Yes Men have doubly pranked Enbridge, first by generating a bogus "MyHairCares" campaign to sop up the expected oil spills - part of their "dummy" Enbridge website http://northern-gateway.ca/ (the real one is http://www.northerngateway.ca/) - then by posing as the affronted oil giant to toss off an angry letter of complaint.

News outlets, citizens duped by web of deceit - but whose?

A day-long comedy of errors began Monday morning when the Yes Men, supported by Rainforest Action Network and Amazon Watch, pre-empted Chevron's enormous new “We Agree” ad campaign with a satirical version of their own. The activists' version highlights Chevron's environmental and social abuses - the same abuses they say Chevron is attempting to “greenwash.”

“Chevron's super-expensive fake street art is a cynical attempt to gloss over the human rights abuses and environmental degradation that is the legacy of Chevron's operations in Ecuador, Nigeria, Burma and throughout the world,” said Ginger Cassady, a campaigner at Rainforest Action Network. “They must think we're stupid.”

Yes Men's Fake U.S. Chamber of Commerce Press Release Removed From Internet


A California internet service provider ceded to the demands of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and has removed from the internet a spoofed press release set up by the culture jamming collective the Yes Men. The release falsely announced the Chamber now supports legislation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

A wide variety of mainstream news outlets picked up Monday’s hoax announcement, which was followed by a staged press conference at the National Press Club featuring a Yes Men member posing as a spokesman for the Chamber of Commerce. The press conference was interrupted when an actual chamber spokesman burst into the room and confronted his tree-hugging doppelganger.
