„Information Freedom Rules" is the title of the 4th Wizards of OS conference, taking place in Berlin on 14-16 September 2006. Among the topics are the future of free software and the presence of free netlabel music, the freedom of art and the free culture nation Brazil. The rules to be discussed include copyright law and licenses, quality assurance in free information and regulation of the electromagnetic spectrum, an essential resource as we move into the mobile wireless era. Another essential resource is money. New rules for an economy based on free culture will be one of the focus issues of WOS4.

Rethinking Failure

The title piece, Would You Rather Be a Loser or a Pig? offers the viewer an extreme choice between one of two free bracelets: one reads "Loser," the other reads "Pig," reflecting the increasing tendency within the art world to define achievement solely in terms of financial earnings and conspicuous consumption.

Faced with the choice by Jennifer Dalton I took the coward's way out chosing a bracelet from the offered box blindly and came up a "PIG". If I'd only known this years ago...

... As Pamela Lee has recently reminded us: ‘systems theory was applied to emerging forms of digital media ... but it also served to explain art not expressly associated with technology today: conceptual art and its linguistic propositions, site-specific work and its environmental dimensions, performance art and its mattering of real time, minimalism even.’

Sol LeWitt on New Materials

New materials are one of the great afflictions of contemporary art. Some artists confuse new materials with new ideas. There is nothing worse than seeing art that wallows in gaudy baubles. By and large most artists who are attracted to these materials are the ones who lack the stringency of mind that would enable them to use the materials well. It takes a good artist to use new materials and make them into a work of art. The danger is, I think, in making the physicality of the materials so important that it becomes the idea of the work (another kind of expressionism).

STEAL THIS FILM

The League Of Noble Peers sends the following dossier:

In 2006, a group of friends decided to make a film about filesharing that we would recognise.

There have been a few documentaries by 'old media' crews who don't understand the net and see peer-to-peer organisation as a threat to their livelihoods. They have no reason to represent the filesharing movement positively, and no capacity to represent it lucidly.
